Tips to Quit SmokingSubmitted by remediesathome Wed, 5 Aug 2009
Everybody knows how hard it is to quit smoking. Even people who have never smoked understand the tremendous amount of willpower and drive it takes to actually quit smoking for good.
Another tip to help quit smoking is to "write down why you want to quit". Be specific about what you're looking for out of this effort to quit smoking. Especially in the areas of you life (day to day, and long term), you're health, your family and your children. You may find it surprising just how helpful it is to have a heartfelt "reason why" to help you to quit smoking. There are many stop-smoking programs. Some of them are good and some are bad. The worst kinds are the ones that take time to arrive. That's why downloading a program on the internet is a great way to go. One of the more popular ways to quit smoking is to use nicotine replacements. There are a lot of products on the market today that replace the nicotine fix smokers are accustomed to getting. These can range from Nicotine chewing gums to pills and patches. These can help to cope with withdrawal symptoms. This is crucial to your success. You have to be truly ready to quit. No excuses. You've made the decision and you're sticking with it and you'll do whatever it takes. Your decision must have a firm basis, like wanting to stay healthy, or getting rid of the inconvenience of smoking, or to protect your family from second-hand smoke. Or maybe you just want to get fit so you can enjoy physical activity without gasping for breath. Most likely on the first try you were only able to quit for a few hours or a few days. You learned how stressful this would be. The second or third time, you might have succeeded for 2 weeks or more. That time, you got a feel for what it would be like in the long term. You now know that quitting smoking will require something more than you think you possess. The first two quit smoking ways above, have the lowest success rate and are not recommended. There are some herbal and hypnosis quit smoking products that claim a success rate of 90% or more, these are your best choice. Drink Lots of water and fluids to help wash out out the nicotine and other poisons from your body. Change your normal routine with simple exercises. Even a jog could be helpful. Studies have shown that only 16% of smokers who use nicotine replacement therapy (patches and gums etc.) succeed at quitting, and only 10% of smokers who use will power succeed. Furthermore the people that use these methods still have to deal with cravings, pangs, nicotine withdrawal symptoms, weight gain and stress. However, as much as I disagree with the NRT approach to quitting smoking, it does boast a higher success rate than cold turkey with about 1 in 10 people quitting smoking for more than 1 year - but not quitting nicotine!
