Toledo Mall Asbestos Cancer Exposure

Submitted by justice
Thu, 12 Mar 2009

According to recent reports, a mall in Toledo, OH is at risk of being shut down if management doesn’t take action to remove the asbestos found on the property.

Officials discovered in an investigation conducted last week that parts of the mall are contaminated with asbestos, as well as black mold.

Both of these substances are extremely harmful and can cause fatal illnesses to those who are exposed.

City Issues Asbestos Warning

Officials for the city of Toledo recently issued the management at the Southwyck Shopping Mall a warning regarding the immediate removal of the asbestos.

The notice reportedly informed the management that they have 72-hours for the removal or the mall will be temporarily shut down.

“The present condition of the mall makes it a health hazard for the public and employees working here,” says Chris Zervos, city’s commissioner of building inspection for the city of Toledo. “They’ll have 72 hours to clean up the mold and secure the asbestos so dust is not allowed to escape into public areas of the mall.”

Workers and Employees at Risk of Asbestos Cancer

Toledo’s commissioner of environmental services, Tim Murphy, reported that asbestos, which is a known carcinogen, was found in the old Montgomery Ward store.

Even though this store is no longer open for business to customers, maintenance crews and other personnel have been working in there.

“I hope it does not come to the point where we have to shut down the mall,”

states Mayor Carty Finkbeiner.
