What is Vision Therapy?
Vision therapy is fancy name for eye exercises. Vision Therapy now uses 3D FUN computer programs. Vision Therapy has been researched by the major universities around the world and has been clinically proven to treat various vision problems.
My child tested has 20/20 eyesight but has slow reading. Could she need Vision Therapy?
Yes, being able to read the letters on an eye chart at 20 feet distance does not guarantee adequate visual skills for reading and learning. The problems with eye alignment, eye teaming, focusing, and visual endurance which are likely to affect school work are easily missed in school screenings and conventional 20/20 eye sight tests.
What is Vision Therapy Used to Treat?
Vision therapy treats a range of problems including Reading Difficulties, Reduced Attention, Poor Comprehension and Attention Problems. Many of these conditions are caused by vision problems, so once the vision therapy treats the problem, the child improves significantly.
What other problems can be helped with vision therapy?
Vision therapy can also be used to treat Lazy Eye. In fact, many cases of lazy eye (amblyopia) can be successfully treated with vision therapy at any age. For many years, it was thought that amblyopia (lazy eye) can only be treated up to age seven or eight years, however current research has conclusively demonstrated that effective treatment can take place at any age.
Vision therapy can also treat the visual consequences of traumatic brain injuries caused in closed head trauma, whiplash and motor vehicle accidents.
Can Vision Therapy help ADD/ADHD?
Yes. Many children diagnosed with ADD/ADHD have a vision problem. Infact research conducted at UCLA-San Diego showed children with ADD/ADHD are 3 times more likely to have a vision problem. Once the eyes have improved after Vision Therapy often the attention problems are solved.
Are computers used in vision therapy?
Yes. Vision Therapy now used FUN 3D games. The computer has produced major advancements in vision therapy. State-of-the-art technology and software allows Optometrists to offer patients challenging programs for the enhancement of eye teaming, focusing, binocularity, fusional and convergence skills, and perceptual-cognitive skills, etc.
Can a vision problem affect a child's self esteem?
Yes. Children with vision problems often have a history of underachievement and frustration. They often conclude that the reason for their low achievement is that they are not as "smart" as other children. Correcting the vision problems which have been interfering with normal performance can have dramatic effects on both performance and self esteem.
How long does vision therapy take to correct the Vision Problem?
Generally, vision therapy takes only 3-6 months. Vision therapy programs are individually designed for each child, so the duration of treatment will be affected by the child's vision problem.
How long do the results of vision therapy last?
Most often the results of Vision Therapy last a life-time.
Most healthy vision therapy patients enjoy long term resolution of their visual problems. Patients with significant vision problems, lazy eye or traumatic brain injury may need to perform vision therapy weekly in order to maintain the improvements
