Vision is very important. Most of us take advantage of the things we see and experience. Over a million people each year suffer from some kind of severe vision loss. One of six people in America over the age of 55 develops macular degeneration. Eyesight is a very precious sense, so it's understandable that many people fear sudden loss or gradual loss of vision. Can you imagine losing your eyesight? The thought alone is a horrible one. As we approach old age it's a thought that leaves an impression on our minds more and more. A healthy diet and exercise is good for your health which in turn will keep your eyes working properly.

In order to have healthy eyes, eat foods that are rich in vitamin A - carotenoids, lutein, zeaxanthin, beta carotene and lycopene such as collard greens, broccoli, carrots, beetroots, corn, green peas, kale, romaine lettuce, spinach, turnip greens, zucchini and egg yolks. Fruits such as Papaya, blueberries, bilberries and apricots. Also cold-water fish such as tuna, cod, salmon, haddock & sardines.

There are other simple things that can be done to improve your vision as well. Its simple to just turn the lights on, working in a bright area makes it much easier to focus on text and images when the area is well lit. Keep your reading material at an arms length away. Forcing your eyes to focus at a close distance causes more stress to your eyes and can cause nearsightedness. Taking breaks and glance off into the distance every few minutes gives your eyes the opportunity to relax when reading.

Evidence suggests that vitamin C helps reduce the risk of cataracts and slows down macular degeneration, which commonly occurs in old age. Research also shows that vitamin C reduces the pressure that is associated with glaucoma. Vitamin C can be found in citrus fruits such as oranges, lemons, and grapefruit. Other sour tasting fruits such as pineapple and green mangoes are also rich in vitamin C.

Finding a good mix to the foods you eat together can help the body break down foods and digest nutrients properly. Too many carbohydrates taken with protein, like meat and potatoes, can be hard for the body to break down leaving you feeling as if food is just sitting on the gut. Proteins should be mixed with vegetables, meat and a salad. The body will be able to break it down easily and the proper amount of nutrients will be absorbed.

Having balanced and nutritious diet full of nutrients and vitamins will solve the purpose and you can have healthy eyes forever. There are some specific nutrients associated with our ocular health essential for our eyes. Today people take into account specialized dietary plans to enhance the ocular health. It has been proved by the scientists that nutritional diet can even reverse the age related eye problems as muscular degeneration and various others as well.

Blue berries are the rich source of antioxidants and they can prevent age-related macular degeneration. So take blueberries mixed with yogurt twice a week. Bilberries contain anthocyanosides, which protect the retina against macular degeneration. So take bilberries weekly twice.
