Should You Consider Lap Band Surgery?

Submitted by linklander@yahoo.com
Thu, 10 Jan 2008

In this day and age, more and more people are finding themselves over their normal body weight due to a variety of reasons. Though the proper diet and exercise is always the default recommendation of our doctors, there are those who simply need some extra help when it comes to weight loss.

Lap band surgery is one of the options for people who want to lose weight effectively. Lap band surgery is a procedure wherein a small pouch is created within the upper stomach. This is achieved with the placement of a prosthetic band. As a result, the amount of food that the person takes in is limited.

Who are qualified for lap band surgery? Definitely not everyone. Persons who look into lap band surgery must undergo a comprehensive medical examination. If you have gastric problems such as ulcer and GERD, you will not be eligible for lap band surgery. Thyroid problems are also a deterrent for lap band surgery. In general, lap band surgery is recommended for people with a BMI of 40 and above. People who are 100 pounds above their ideal weight are also candidates for lap band surgery. More so, lap band surgery is recommended for people between 18 and 55 years of age, although some doctors perform the procedure for people outside this age range depending on the circumstances.

What exactly is a lap band? This term is short for laparoscopic gastric band and is made of silicone. It is adjustable and inflatable. It is placed by means of laparoscopic surgery and is inflated through a small access port which is located under the skin.

What are the benefits of a lap band surgery? For one, lap band surgery involves a lot less pain than other types of surgery geared towards weight loss. For many people, this is an important consideration. In addition to this, there are no dumping syndromes involved after the procedure. This is one of lap band surgery’s biggest advantage over other surgical weight loss procedures such as a gastric bypass. Dumping is the occurrence of intolerance to sugars and certain carbohydrates. More so, lap band surgery is a simpler operation – again as compared to gastric bypass. This means that there is less risk involved, especially around the time of surgery.

What should you expect after a lap band surgery? Slow and steady weight loss is the result of having a lap band placed. This weight loss will normally stabilize around 2 years after the surgical procedure. The lap band also gives the person more flexibility as it is kind of reversible. For example, if a woman who has a lap band plans to get pregnant, the lap band can be deflated for the duration of the pregnancy and then re-inflated after giving birth.

The important thing when you are considering lap band surgery is to consult your doctors thoroughly and determine if it is the right solution for you and whether you are willing to undergo all the possible implications.
