What is a Periodontist?Submitted by AamyLee Fri, 19 Jun 2009
Periodontology, or Periodontics, is the branch of dentistry which studies supporting structures of teeth, and diseases and conditions that affect them.
Periodontal diseases take on many different forms but are usually a result of a coalescence of bacterial plaque biofilm accumulation of the gingiva and teeth, combined with host immuno-inflammatory mechanisms and other risk factors which lead to destruction of the supporting bone around natural teeth. Untreated, these diseases lead to alveolar bone loss and tooth loss and, to date, continue to be the leading cause of tooth loss in adults. A Periodontist is a dentist who specializes in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of periodontal diseases, and the surgical placement and long term maintenance of dental implants. A Periodontist is an individual that not only successfully completes dental school, but one that uniquely specializes in diseases that affect the gums and teeth by completing three more years of specialized schooling. Capable of treating periodontal disease in both its early and progressive stages, a periodontist can help a patient achieve the maximum benefits associated with good dental health and proper periodontal treatment. Furthermore, we at D & D Periodontal Associates, P.C. are Diplomates of the American Board of Periodonotology, which means that additional advanced study and requirements were met to become board certified periodontists.
