Breast Augmentation: What to Expect Before and AfterSubmitted by jrsencio Sun, 11 Nov 2007
Are you unhappy with the shape or size of your breasts? Do you think they could be better...bigger? If you feel that way, you are one of countless other women who are dissatisfied with breast shape, size and contour, and the reasons vary.
If you are considering breast augmentation as a solution to your problem, remember that some size and shape differences are normal and while the insertion of implants by breast augmentation may increase the size, they won’t correct basic shape and form defects. There may be a need for other forms of corrective surgery for that. Breast augmentation is performed with the patient under general anaesthesia and involves the insertion of the breast implant through a small incision under the breast or armpit. There are different types of breast implants to choose from, and they vary according to implant filler, implant size, and shape. Deciding on the appropriate implant to use is determined by your breast anatomy, body type and your desired increase in size. Your plastic surgeon will also ask you about your personal goals and your life, he will then give you his recommendation based on all these factors put together. When picking a clinic or a surgeon, always make sure to check for professional certification, experience and expertise. A positive sign that you can get are testimonials from other satisfied patients. Breast implants are made of solid silicone, rubber shell and are filled with either saline solution or elastic silicone gel. Breast implants vary both by filler and in size, but there are additional features to consider like texture - whether the implant shell is smooth or textured; shape - whether the implant has a round profile or anatomic like a teardrop or tapered shape; profile - whether the implant has low, medium or high projection; and diameter - which is the width of the implant measured across it's base. Breast augmentation usually takes an hour to two, after which you will have to wear dressing and bandaging 2 to 4 days after the operation. After this period, a support bra is worn for around 3 weeks however some patients are normally up and about within 24 hours. You should try not to strain yourself and avoid strenuous activity like heavy lifting for about a month. As a result of the procedure, there will be noticeable bruising and swelling around the breasts but that should disappear in time. You might also feel some firmness and a little discomfort for several days and if this discomfort continues you should consult your doctor or the clinic where you had the procedure, as soon as possible.
