New research released by Northwestern University earlier this week has discovered how HIV is actually transmitted through the lining of the vaginal tract during intercourse. Previously, researchers thought HIV was transmitted via skin lesions or areas of the cervical canal.

These findings play an important part in how condoms should be used and specifically, how female condoms need to be designed to prevent the spread of HIV. Female condoms haven't caught on in the USA due mostly to cost and comfort level. Costs are normally around $1-$1.50 for one female condom in comparison to a quarter (or free) for regular condoms. Most comfort complaints include difficult insertion and a squeek type noise during intercourse.

Fortunately, the FDA has endorsed a new type of female condom that is both cheaper and more comfortable than previous versions. With costs 30% lower and synthetic rubber being the main product compenent, the new FC2 female condom should expand usage among women. Over 170 women's health, AIDS, and other organizations applauded the move by the FDA as the increase in female cases continues to increase. Almost 15 years after the first female condom, FC1, there is finally a product that can put the focus on the protection of women from HIV and STD's.
