Breastfeeding has several health benefits for both baby and the mother. But after a specific time period, breastfeeding should be stopped. In this article you will find useful information on when and how a feeding mother should stop breastfeeding.

There is no exact rule about when to stop breastfeeding. Every feeding mother should know that after the age of eight months there are no magical benefits of breast milk to the child. After the age of one year, breast milk is simply a liquid food for the baby. So, there is no absolute benefit of breastfeeding, after the age of one year. It provides only psychological satisfaction, physical comfort and some food value.

A woman has to decide for herself, how long to continue breastfeeding her baby. In case she feels embarrassed because of the comments of other people, she can feed the baby in private. Breast milk is considered the most valuable and healthy food for the baby. It prevent child from many diseases. It also helps to prevent child from being obese. Breastfeeding should not be discontinued before the baby is four to six months of age. Semi-solid food should never be given before the age of four months, and at the same time it must not be delayed beyond the age of eight months.

The process of discontinuing breastfeeding should be slow. This will prevent the baby from becoming fretful and the breast from becoming painful or tense. There are several medicines available in the market that dries up the milk. These medicines are not advised.

Some babies enjoy suckling the nipples and such babies should be offered a bottle when being given artificial milk. Remember, that the feeding bottle and the nipples should be clean. Discontinue the evening feed first. Then keep discontinuing the feeds one at a time after an interval of 4 or 5 days. The last feeds which should be dropped are the early morning and the late night feeds, since discontinuing these first might produce tension and pain in your breasts. Hope this article will be helpful in deciding the correct time to stop breastfeeding your child.
