While sexual arousal disorders may be commonly associated with men, it is a fallacious thinking that women are not affected by the problem. In females, sexual arousal disorders are commonly labeled as frigidity. The condition is characterized by a recurrent failure to attain and maintain adequate vaginal lubrication and swelling response and maintain it until the completion of sexual activity. While this is a condition that affects sexual performance and the amount of satisfaction that a woman can derive from it, one should not confuse the condition with other cases of sexual problems especially problems pertaining to lack of interest in sexual activity. In women suffering from sexual arousal disorders, there is no diminishing of sexual activity interest—what is present is the inability to maintain a high level of sexual response, which is the key to attaining sexual pleasure.

Women and Sexual Arousal Disorders

There are various reasons as to why some women suffer from sexual arousal disorders. The following are some of the common culprits based on studies and researches:

1) The common problem that affects sexual arousal in women has something to do with her relationship with her partner or her views toward attaining sexual arousal. In some women, they view sexual arousal as something too private and are ashamed to admit having reached the stage. As a result, some of them try to avoid attaining it as much as they can.

2) On the other hand, a poor relationship with her partner, especially when abuse is involved, will not help the condition. In fact, some studies suggest that a woman's overall satisfaction with the relationship will directly play into the amount of satisfaction she may derive from the whole sexual activity itself.

3) Another factor that can contribute to sexual arousal problems in women has something to do with more personal matters. These factors include fatigue, gender identity, health, along with experiences that may alter one's views towards sex. Here, counseling is the most common form of treatment in to help. Such a condition states that a woman may be unable to achieve a certain level of sexual arousal due to certain problems of which she may not have an outlet.

4) Another factor that can cause sexual arousal problem in women are childhood experiences or the kind of sex education that one received during her childhood. Here, the problem is that a kind of information may have been inculcated into a woman's mind and persisted for too long and thus affect her sexual arousal level well into her adolescence.
