You Don't Have to Settle For Addiction

Submitted by Simmons

While addiction is certainly troubling to the individual and her family, addiction is a treatable disorder.
Addiction does not occur out of nowhere and usually follows a path of experimentation, occasional use and constant use. What happens to the brain is that it begins to crave the drug as if it were necessary for survival.
Once addicted to a substance, other drugs will often follow. The brain becomes so dependent on these substances that it craves more and more. This is what leads to addicts becoming completely engrossed in their habit, while dropping out of hobbies and activities, as well as damaging relationships with friends and family.
Addiction symptoms include tolerance and withdrawal. Tolerance is where the body builds up a resistance to the drug, making the body crave more. When an addict starts taking too much of a drug, overdose can occur. Withdrawal is what happens when the body does not get enough, or any, of the drug. Negative physical and psychological effects can occur until the substance enters the body again.
Addiction can affect anyone and can occur from just about anything. The most common forms of addiction are to drugs and alcohol. However, people can be addicted to video games, food, or Internet pornography. All of these addictions carry the same symptoms in the brain, as it continues to crave more and more of the addictive behavior.
When treating addiction, most treatment plans focus on eliminating the drug either immediately or gradually. In the process, treatment plans help addicts to change their lifestyle and values.
One of the most important elements to addiction recovery is that the addict finds new and meaningful hobbies. Hobbies are not only great ways to pass the time, but they help individuals to regain confidence and work toward something they are good at.
Support groups and therapy sessions are also great tools in addiction recovery. Support groups offer a close-knit and secure circle of friends for a recovering addict. Not only are support groups great ways to connect with one another, but they provide support outside of group hours. If a recovering addict is considering relapse, he can immediately call someone in the support group for help.
Most importantly, a recovering addict must remember that she is in control. Relapse is a common occurrence in addiction recovery, and often times it's because the person feels a lack of control. Instead, it's important to know that the recovering addict is responsible for the progress and outcome of the addiction treatment.
Depending on what substance the addiction was caused by, recovering addicts have to learn to deal with the cravings, especially when they come into contact with the substance. While it is easier to steer clear of drugs and alcohol, it can be quite difficult to do this with food or the Internet.
That is why it is essential that a recovering addict sticks with an individual therapy or counseling program, so that their underlying reasons for addiction can be in control.
