A Guide to Buying a Mattress

Submitted by lbuild5@marvist.com

Many of us spend more time using our beds than any other furniture at home. If you’re shopping for a new mattress, look for comfort and support. Some people have bad experience with their new mattress, preferring the comfort of the old reliable to the new one. This is because they have selected a new mattress with different support to their old one. This is why it’s very important to take care when choosing a new matttress.

Types of Mattress:
There are two types of mattresses – Spring Mattresses and Non-Spring Mattresses.

Spring mattresses

• Open Coil Springs
This is the most widely used type of material in the mattresses. Each spring in the mattress is connected together with a firm wire to form the spring unit. The steel used in the springs will be tempered to ensure recovery and a long lifespan. Generally it is cheaper than the other options and comes in a variety of tension options.

• Continuous Coil Springs
Continuous coil springs works as an inter-linked system, made from one long piece of wire, which allows all the springs to work in unison. This continuous spring wire runs from top to bottom of the mattress, which distributes the weight of the body through the springs across the entire sleep surface. The high spring count makes them responsive to individual body shapes and support requirements, which makes them more comfortable.

• Pocket Spring
This is the popular type in the spring mattresses. Pocket spring mattress is made up of small springs placed in individual fabric pockets. The pockets are connected together to form the bigger spring unit, which allows the mattress to fully support the body and totally adopt the bodyline, giving a better support from head to toe. This spring system is considered to be the best of the category. One possible disadvantage of this type of spring system is that it is expensive.

Non-Spring Mattresses

• Natural Latex
Natural Latex is a hypoallergenic and anti-microbial material, which is particularly helpful for people who have respiratory problems. Latex also moulds perfectly to the body giving greater comfort, and good neck and back support. Water based latex is a good material available in the category. Natural Latex is derived from the sap of rubber trees and also it is known for its distinguishing elastic properties and durability.

• Memory Foam/Visco Elastic
This is the most popular mattress. Originally developed by NASA, visco elastic contains millions of microscopic memory pockets, which slowly react to body heat and weight allowing the body to partially immerse, whilst moulding to the body. The result is optimum support and pressure relief. Visco elastic mattress gives relief for pressure points and respite for backache, painful joints and circulatory problems.

This information will help you in choosing the right type of the mattress according to your needs and requirements.
