Acne, is the solution clear?Submitted by Polly Winder Mon, 24 Aug 2009
Prescription medication alone can't always treat chronic breakouts of acne. More innovative dermatologists are now using light and laser therapy alongside more traditional forms of medication.
Blemish Clinic in Manchester are one of very few dermatologists to use this ground-breaking blue light therapy and diode laser therapy to treat the cause of acne. This treatment reduces oil production, speeding up the growth of new skin cells and the removal of dead skin cells, and fights bacterial infection. Jan Birch, a leading Dermatologist from the Blemish Clinic explains the cause of acne, "Excess sebum and dead skin cells solidify forming a plug in the hair follicle. This plug grows, the follicle wall can rupture, allowing more oil and skin cells to accumulate. Bacteria can then trigger additional inflammation and infection making it much worse." The laser and light based therapies reach the deeper layers of the skin without touching the skin's surface. Jan comments, "Laser systems target the sebum glands which produce oil causing less production and so less breakouts. Both therapies can also improve skin condition and help treat acne scarring." In some cases chemical face peels and microdermabrasion can control acne. Jan Birch says, "Traditionally these cosmetic procedures have been used to reduce the appearance of fine lines, sun damage and minor facial scars but we have found they can be really effective in treating acne."
