All About When Your Basement Is Flooded And Water Damage CleanupSubmitted by englishsunset Sun, 30 Jan 2011
The water damage cleanup required when your basement is flooded can be devastating. There can be so much work, so much mess and so little money that you feel like throwing your hands up in despair.
Obviously, the first thing is to stop the water from flooding the basement, find the source and do whatever it takes. This can be as simple as turning off a faucet, or a main water line. Or it could mean hauling in landfill and doing major grading to the outside soil so the water is allowed to drain away from the house. There are so many ways that water can enter the house; seeping through the concrete floor, a crack in the foundation, poorly joined walls and flooring, leaking plumbing, or rain water entering through a window. Whatever the case may be, it is essential that the homeowner do whatever is necessary to stop the water. It might be necessary to use basement sump pumps to get the water out of the basement. This is a real time saver, taking the place of rags, mops and the like. Shortcuts do not lead to a lasting solution, and if you try and merely treat the symptoms of water damage, you will only be asking for more trouble later on. Take the extra pains to do it right, it will save you money and headaches in the long run. If the walls or flooring are damaged, you may very well need to replace them. That musty basement smell is a sure indication of black mold or mildew growing in the nice moist environment. In some cases you can save the water damaged furniture or structure, but very often it is better to simply replace it and start over. There are quite a few good basement waterproofing products on the market, and many reputable companies that specialize in water damage prevention and restoration. Check with the company for references and maybe even with the Chamber of Commerce to do a background check. There are numerous companies making basement floor paint and this can really put the finish touches back into your cellar or basement. This paint acts as a sealant to prevent water from seeping up into the house from the ground. Installing French drains around the foundation can make a huge difference. I don't know if they really use these in France, but I can say, from personal experience, that they really work well. It is quite a bit of physical work to put them in, but not complicated at all. Anyone of good health can do this, if they just have the instructions. If you do not have the physical strength to install French drains, hire somebody else to do the bulk of the work, leaving the simpler things for you, the homeowner. Foundation cracks are a different problem altogether. You can patch the crack, only to see it quickly return, now what do you do? Try to determine how the crack got there in the first place, and then act to get rid of the problem.
