Dealing with the Emotional Stress of Finding a Nursing HomeSubmitted by 10xseo@gmail.com Tue, 2 Jun 2009
When our parent's grow older, a fact of life is that your responsibility as their child is to take care of them as they had taken care of you when you were a child. While it is a harsh reality, as we grow older we start to become more and more like the children we once were. This can be emotionally stressful when trying to take care of your parent's on your own. Finding your parent's a nursing home can be quite stressful as well. You may feel like you're pawning your parent's off into a system rather than taking care of them yourself. We must be realistic. When your parent's took care of you, is it not true that they needed help as well? Certainly we all spent time in a day care at some point while our parent's worked to take care of us. It's almost the exact same thing but we are trying to find instead an adult day care. Most of our parent's work every day of their life to provide for their children until the day they can retire and reflect on how you are becoming successful in your own life.
When we think of a nursing home we think of a place where a lot of "checked out" old persons live, to die. It exists to help where you as children cannot help your parent's full time, while there is still a life to be lived. You cannot call a babysitter over for one night so that you and a loved one can enjoy a peaceful night alone. It is true that an adult day care is more permanent that any of the day care's that we spent in as a child. We have all grown to an extent where we don't need them anymore. We need to open ourselves to the possibilities that are out there to make our parent's lives easier as well as our own. We may all go through the emotional stress of this process, but it must be done so we don't get so stressed that we lose touch with what we want most out of life. A theater of dreams exists in all of us. We reference to them when we fantasize about what we think will make us happier than we already are. It is a hope that most of our parent's have been able to live their dreams before they reach a state where a nursing home may be needed to continue life without discomfort. Given the mental extent that one could acquire when becoming older, an adult day care may also be a good place to communicate with your parents whatever wishes they may have before what sand that fills our hourglass of time runs out. It is important in these last years to spend as much time your parents as possible, but also important that we do not sacrifice what we cannot get back. It is a crucial aspect in our lives to deal with the emotions that enter when trying to find a good home for our parent's.
