4 Common Cooking Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

Submitted by neillisa

Not everyone is a pro in the kitchen, but that doesn\'t mean you can\'t make decent meals on your own. Even celebrity chefs were beginners at some point, and chances are they made their own mistakes. But cooking is a learning process, and it\'s these mistakes that help you learn and improve. So don\'t let a couple of bad meals keep you from the kitchen. To help you out, here\'s a list of kitchen mistakes people commonly make, and how you can keep from making them yourself.

1. Choosing bad produce

Every home cook will need to buy meat, vegetables and other ingredients from time to time. The quality of your ingredients greatly affects how your dish will turn out. Learn how to choose the freshest vegetables and the best cuts of meat. Find a reliable source for ingredients you commonly use to keep a good level of quality.

2. Over- or under-cooking

Beginners often have trouble estimating stovetop temperatures. Most of them will turn it up to the highest setting so that food will cook faster. But what usually happens is that the food is cooked or even burnt on the outside, but still raw inside. If the recipe doesn\'t specify the temperature setting, use medium heat and check the inside once in a while.

3. Not adapting to cooking methods

Once in a while, you\'ll want to recreate old recipes in a different method-grilling to baking, frying to steaming, stovetop to crock pot. But each method works a different way, and you\'ll have to make some adjustments to accommodate the difference. For the crock pot, for example, you\'ll need to use less liquid since it won\'t boil away as it does on the stove.

4. Overusing spices

It can be tempting to use all the spices on the rack, but not all of them will work together. You can experiment with new flavors, but keep in mind the flavors that go well together and those that don\'t. When adding spices, use just a little at a time-it\'s always easier to add more than remove what you\'ve already mixed in.

Many bad meals are actually the result of simple errors, mistakes that could easily have been prevented. This list shows some of the most common kitchen mistakes and how they can be avoided. Find more information about cooking with spices.
