Choosing Paints: Both Inside and Outside Your Home

Paint can make or break a home. You want to make sure you choose the right paint to make your house beautiful and inviting. You should decide which factors are the most important to you before painting the interior of your home.

Flat paint is the most inexpensive type of paint and is also the hardest to clean. It is most often used in garages, closets, and other places that do not need a finished feel. If you do use flat paint, use a few coats to give your room more life. Semi-gloss paint is a better choice if you want something that is easy to clean and has a slight shine. Semi-gloss will also give the illusion of space because it reflects light.

You should also consider color when picking paint. Rooms that receive a lot of light can handle dark colors. If a room doesnt have adequate light, however, picking a dark color of paint will only make it seem darker. Light colors are the best choice in this situation as they will brighten the room. Dark colors also tend to make room smaller. So, if you want to create the illusion of space, a light color is your best choice. If the room in question is actually quite large already, then dark colors or accent walls will work just fine.

Picking paint for the exterior of your home can be a bit trickier, depending on where you live and what type of home you have. The style of your home will determine which paint colors will work the best. Colonial homes look best in traditional colors while extravagant Victorian homes can pull off more wild color combinations. You should also consider other outdoor features, such as landscaping, and make sure your color selection compliments the existing colors. If you have a more practical mind-set, you should pick colors that increase energy efficiency. Dark colors will help your house absorb heat and light colors will reflect heat. Keep this in mind when picking a color to paint your home.

You may have to consider your neighborhood and homeowners association when picking a paint color as well. If there are no restrictions other than taste, picking the same color as everyone else will make your home blend in. On the other hand, picking a totally different color will make your house stick out, and not necessarily in a good way. You should pick a color that is similar to, but not exactly the same, as all the other houses on your street. If you have rules you have to follow, make sure you comply with them. Find out if there are any neighborhood restrictions or homeowners association rules. You do not want to paint your house the perfect color only to have to redo it because it was not on the list of approved colors.

Make sure the paint you choose is one that you will be happy with for many years to come and that reflects your personal style. You should consider all these factors before picking a paint type and color so that you are sure to get results you can be proud of.
