For most Americans, the Fourth of July is as much a cause for celebration as Christmas or a birthday. Who doesn\'t want to take advantage of the day off, the great weather, and the festive mood?

Of course, if you\'re the one in charge of the food, it\'s a whole different story. Sure, everyone likes a good barbecue and you can\'t go wrong with a traditional menu. But sometimes you just want something different, and most people are too afraid to experiment. If you\'re not sure what to make for this year\'s party, read on for some simple tips.

You\'ll probably want some picnic foods as your main course, and a great way to start is with a simple barbecue recipe. It\'s usually best to keep things light as the occasion tends to be more activity-based. If it\'s a casual party with just friends and family, you can even set up a grill and have everyone take their pick from your spread. It\'s like an outdoor buffet, except that it\'s a lot more fun.

If you want to throw in a side dish, your best bet is a light green salad or something similar. Not only is it easier to make, it\'s also a lot lighter to carry around for a picnic. Use whatever greens you have, and drizzle on the dressing just before you pack it. That way, it all looks fresh and new when it\'s time to serve.

Of course, you can\'t forget dessert-and this year, cupcakes are the must-have for every table. Cupcakes work well for Fourth of July picnics because they\'re light and portable, and they keep very well outdoors even in the hot weather. Even a simple cupcake recipe can be turned into a masterpiece with the right decorations. Use toppers to create patriotic themes and make them really stand out.

Finally, don\'t forget to be a little creative with your presentation. Even if it\'s a casual event, it won\'t hurt to serve your food in nice paper plates or arrange the table so that it warrants a second look. After all, it only comes once a year-you\'ll definitely want a picture-perfect table to top it off!
