FoxFarm Nutrients - The Organic ChoiceSubmitted by slobac@gmail.com Tue, 28 Apr 2009
If you are like growing numbers of people who are concerned about the way large corporate agriculture continues to adulterate our food, you may be interested in FoxFarm nutrients, whether you grow hydroponics vegetables inside or are a traditional outside gardener. A small family-owned company, the people who produce FoxFarm nutrients pride themselves are providing high-quality, Earth-friendly soil mixtures and organic fertilizers.
It should be noted that while such organic hydroponic nutrients are certainly better for you as well as the planet, you are in for a lot more work in the way of care and maintenance if you plan to grow hydroponics this way. The problem with organic liquid fertilizers is that they tend to clog pump systems - which will ultimately cause them to overheat and fail, cutting off your plants' supply of hydroponic nutrients. We don't want to discourage anyone from using organic liquid fertilizers in their endeavors to grow hydroponic style produce, but be prepared to put some extra effort into it - particularly if yours is an active recovery system, such as ebb and flow. Such organic hydroponic nutrients may be suitable if you use a passive non-recovery system such as the wick method. It should also be noted that FoxFarm nutrients, while certainly of excellent quality, are primarily intended for outdoor gardeners. Organic fertilizers release nutrients slowly, imitating nature. Chemical fertilizers are engineered to release nutrients very quickly, which is why they are undesirable for traditional vegetable gardens. These kinds of liquid fertilizers contain much higher concentrations of plant nutrients as well as salt and/or acidic compounds. The problem is that in a natural environment, the plants can absorb only so much in the way of these nutrients, so the excess residue winds us contaminating the soil. However, this is not an issue for ebb and flow, wick system or nutrient film hydroponic systems. It is not as important that hydroponic nutrients be organic for the reason that you are accelerating plant growth by using a medium other than soil. As you may have surmised from this discussion, non-organic hydroponic nutrients are not necessarily a bad thing for the indoor gardener, and FoxFarm nutrients are manufactured from organic ingredients while using technology to create better delivery of food to the plants. While not the best for an ebb and flow or other active recovery system, such organic liquid fertilizers may work well with passive wick systems. Just keep in mind that when it comes to FoxFarm nutrients, a little goes a long way in your hydroponic garden.
From years of indoor and hydroponic gardening, Susan Slobac has developed an in-depth knowledge of hydroponic nutrients and writes frequently on the subject.
