A lot of kids love the kitchen, but mostly because they like to eat-few of them really have the initiative to make their own meals. Many parents have tried and failed to get their kids interested in cooking. But it\'s really not that hard. Often, it\'s just a matter of using the right approach. Kids should view cooking as a fun activity rather than a task. If you\'re having trouble getting your kids to help, here are some tips you might find useful.

1. Give them a hand. Never leave a child alone in the kitchen, even if you\'re sure they\'re responsible enough. Even the brightest kids will still need a bit of help, at least for the cutting and slicing. Kids will feel more confident in their own work knowing that there\'s someone to cover up or correct them when they make mistakes. By doing it together, it feels less like a task and more like a personal project.

2. Start with recipes they like. For kids, part of the fun of cooking is eating and sharing what they\'ve made. Naturally, they\'ll be more willing to give you a hand if they know they\'re going to enjoy it afterwards. So instead of calling them over for vegetable soup, make one of their favorite foods. It doesn\'t have to be fancy-even a simple mac and cheese recipe can give them that initial push.

3. Use the crock pot. Slow cooking is a great way to introduce kids to kitchen work. Because it doesn\'t involve actual cooking, it\'s a lot safer-there\'s no risk of burning, oil splashes, and other stove-related accidents. All you have to do is prepare the ingredients and drop them into the pot. What\'s more, it only takes about 15 minutes-you can do it first thing in the morning and have it ready by dinner time.

4. Let them experiment. It\'s important to stick to the recipe, but kids are naturally curious-they\'ll want to know what will happen if they add this or change that. Don\'t be afraid to let them make their own cooking decisions, as long as you\'re there to guide them.
