Quick Tips for Better MealsSubmitted by neillisa Fri, 3 Jul 2009
Not everyone is a pro in the kitchen, but that doesn\'t mean the rest of us are doomed to bland meals. The only difference between a professional and a home cook is that the pros do it for a living. When you\'re just cooking for your family, there\'s a lot less pressure, so take it as a chance to have fun. As long as you know the basics, cooking is mostly a matter of learning and discovery.
One of the most common rules in home cooking is planning. No matter how experienced you are, it can only get you so far if you don\'t know how to plan your meals. At the start of each week, take a few minutes to sit down and make a list of your meals for the next few days. That way, you avoid "last-minute" meals where you just throw a bunch of ingredients together. Although that works sometimes, it\'s always best to know what you\'re doing. Experimenting is another way to improve your kitchen skills. Most people are used to just serving something heavy, such as roast or steak, with a side and perhaps a dessert. It may be good for some days, but it can get old after a while. Every so often, try mixing things up by using a new ingredient or tweaking the recipe. Not only does it add variety to the table, it also helps you discover new flavors to try with future meals. Try introducing more vegetables into your meals. You don\'t have to go vegetarian at once, but adding the occasional greens to the plate will make it a lot more balanced. There\'s a huge variety of vegetables out there; it\'s just a matter of trying and discovering what you like. Of course, as an added perk, it\'s a lot healthier than full meat dishes. Finally, try using other cooking methods such as slow cooking. Slow-cooked meals tend to have more flavor and less fat that their stovetop counterparts, and the best part is that they\'re cheaper to make. You can use cheaper cuts of meat and still get the same flavor and texture. With a bit of practice, you can make the full switch to slow cooking and enjoy better meals in no time.
You don\'t need to be a celebrity chef to make great meals for your family. These tips show you how to improve your kitchen skills, save time and money, and eat better all at the same time. Find more information about slow cooking vegetarian cooking.
