Flooring, Changing the Base of your House
There is one design item that is looked over more than anything else is flooring. Flooring is often overlooked because it is the base, but that only means that it is really the foundation for your furniture and design choices. It will also add that subtle touch that really upgrades your dollhouse. There are several types of flooring that you might want to consider: Carpet, linoleum, tile, stone, and/or hard wood. The most popular choice is carpet, probably because we enjoy carpet so much in our houses. A quick fix to bathroom or kitchen rooms is linoleum and tile. Adding Stone for your deck, hardwood for your living room will add a fun touch - look around and find the best option! Floor Trim for your Dollhouse If you are a true crafter you are constantly tweaking your creations. The last dollhouse that I was making I discovered a great addition that really made my interior stand out. This big discovery was floor trim. The discovery is not entirely new, or my own, there are many places to get doll trim, but I found the cheapest is a very thin flat balsa wood. I applied this balsa wood to the floor of each of my walls to form a great outline along the bottom. What I found is that they covered up the tiny bumps between the walls and the flooring. It also prevented the wall paper to come unglued because I was covering the bottom edges with the trim. This discovery truly was a small one, but I believe that it really added to my dollhouse. Size: Very Important in Design Always, always remember that there are different sizing elements in miniatures. The first one is the scale of the furniture, second is the size of the room, and third is the relative size of the furniture as it compares to other pieces of furniture. First is the scale of furniture, make sure that your furniture is the right scale for your dollhouse. Meaning that if you have a half inch dollhouse that you need to purchase half inch dollhouse furniture. Size element is the second point, and this is as simple as making sure that your furniture will actually fit in the room. Take out a ruler and measure the square inches of the room and compare it to your incoming furniture dimensions. Finally, relative or comparative size is the size of the furniture in relation to other pieces in the set. Larger pieces will have more of a prominence so if you really want to make your china cabinet pop you shouldn't make the dining room table so elaborate. Lights and Miniatures: The Awe Factor You know when you are really serious about this hobby when you start looking at lighting. This is the point when you have moved from setting up a miniature house for your kids to expanding this hobby into something more. I am not going to lie; lighting is fun, but also a bit challenging. At the same time, isn't the challenge why we are in this hobby? When you break it down, lighting is simply connecting electricity through a wire and a plug. In fact with the instructions at hand you will be surprised at how easy it is. As will all aspects of this game, things will get easier with time. We recommend getting a small electrical kit to start, they are simple to set up and get started with. Remember it is only hard or challenging if you make it out to be.
