Guide to Buying Electric Radio Controlled Cars

Submitted by nitrotek123

Remote controlled cars come in several models and designs. The major categories of radio controlled cars are electric RC cars and gas powered RC cars. Apart from standard types of cars, these remote controlled vehicles are manufactured as racing cars, small trucks, jeeps, monster trucks, etc. In an electric car, the major components are the car kit, the electronic speed controller, the radio control system, electric motor, batteries and battery charger. The car kit is the basic starting point of the car and it could be easily assembled at home. Assembled models are also supplied for those who do not wish to take any risk. The electronic speed controller is a small electronic device and it controls the speed and power of the radio controlled cars.

The radio control system comprises of the steering servo and radio controller. The radio control unit consists of a transmitter, a receiver, 2 servos, servo horns, on/off switch, and battery holder for the receiver. The electric motor comes in two types, brushed motors and brushless motors. The most popular motors are 540 size motors. Standard battery pack consists of 7.2 volt batteries. Previously nickel-cadmium (NiCad) and nickel-hydride (NiMH) batteries were used but of late, LIPO batteries are considered the latest technology. These batteries are not only light but also more durable.

The battery chargers are specially designed for each type of battery. To cite an example, a NiCad charger could not be used to charge LIPO battery. Battery chargers are manufactured in two types. One is a time charger. You should monitor the battery continuously with this type of charger to find out whether it is fully charged. Normal charging time would vary between 15 and 30 minutes. The other type of charger is peak detection charger. This charger is costlier but the charging of the battery is more efficient. The peak detection charger would sense the full charge level of the battery and shut off charging automatically. This is the ideal charger, since overcharging of any battery could easily destroy it.

The normal speed of the radio controlled cars range up to 25 miles an hour. This is the ideal speed for beginners. However, the remote controlled cars could be modified to run with speeds more than 40 miles per hour by using faster motors, high power batteries, and different types of ball bearings. For those new to the hobby of remote controlled cars, electric radio controlled cars are preferable to Petrol RC cars. They have fewer problems, they run quietly, and they do not emit any harmful fumes.

The ideal cars for starting are the electric touring remote controlled cars that are designed as sedan type and they resemble real cars very closely. Both 4-wheel and 2-wheel drive models are available. Further, they are manufactured as shaft or gear driven and belt driven. Shaft driver RC cars have higher speeds, while belt driven RC cars are more stable around corners. However, you could also buy racing cars, jeeps, and trucks later on to add to your collection, when you are able to maneuver them better.
