How to play Carrom?

Submitted by sreejos

As a general rule two, three, four people can play this game. In singles, your opponent sits across from you; in doubles, you play opposite to your partner. With three every individual play for points.

Whoever plays first, or breaks first is always recognized as white. The object of the game is to sink all your carrom coin, using the heavier ‘striker’, in any of the pockets before your opponent. Your turn would carry on as long as you keep sinking your carrom coin – luck shots count an all combinations on carrom boards is permitted. When placing your striker on carrom board to shoot, the striker much touches both base lines, either covering the red circle totally, and not touching it at all. The striker might not touch the diagonal arrow line.

Shooting style is extremely personal – whichever grip works well for you is fine as far as you flick the striker and do not push the same. Usually, it is best to adjust your body in order to see the line of your aim as shooting at ease; you might not move or leave your chair.

Tips

Before shooting, try touching the striker with your finger, to make sure that it is really on line. This will in turn improve your accuracy and prevent you from hurting your finger.

No part of your body, except your hand, should cross the imaginary diagonal line nor should your elbow protrude over the frame in front of you. Even your feet or knees should not leave your quadrant.

The red coin or queen could be pocketed at any time after sinking your first coin respectively but should be sunk before your last one. After getting the queen, you should sink one of your carrom coins, thereby “covering” it, into any pocket in the next shot, or she is suppose to return back to the carrom board’s center spot.

Once the queen is covered, who ever empties their coins first wins the game. The winner of a board collects one point for every opponent's coins left at the end and three points for the queen if covered by the winner (if in case covered by the loser, no-one gets the points). No more points could be collected for the queen after your score reaches 22. A game consists of 25 points or eight boards, either comes first.
