Designing with Linens

Dollhouses contain an enormous potential for miniaturists and hobbyists alike. It is absolutely wonderful to be able to craft and design even the minute details of a doll's house. A great example is using linens to coordinate your dollhouse design, and make things pop. If you are looking for an example, or maybe a good starting point then I would recommend the bedroom. You can coordinate the sheets, mattresses, curtains, pillows, and even a throw blanket. Moving on to the dinning room there is the dinning table cloth and if you are really fancy you can have coordinating napkins. In the bathroom you have towels, floor mats, shower curtains, etc. There is just an unending amount of personal style that you can put into your dollhouse.

Basics of Dollhouse Wallpaper

Wallpaper is the world's best invention, right up there with glue and nails. It really does save a lot of time to put wallpaper up especially if you have done it before. Begin your searching for the perfect wallpaper with a hobby or craft store, and try not to be too overwhelmed as there are thousands of choices out there. Because you are looking to cover a relatively small area, you should look at getting 1 or 2 square feet at a time. You can also print off your own wallpaper. If you have a computer and a semi decent printer simply make a style that you are comfortable and print out a couple sheets. If you are in to scrap booking you should have all the materials that you need. Remember, you learn by doing, so start with something simple and create something amazing.

Look Down: The Floor in your Kit

It is the small things that once changed make the biggest difference, and in this case flooring is a great small change for a big difference. Undoubtedly Flooring is the foundation of your dollhouse, and as such is the foundation for all of your design choices. Just as with new flooring in any house, new flooring in a dollhouse will increase the value and appeal. You have many choices in this decision and every type of flooring will not work for each room - The standard 5 are Carpet, Linoleum, Tile, Stone, and Hard Wood. The most popular choice is carpet, probably because we enjoy carpet so much in our houses. A quick fix to bathroom or kitchen rooms is linoleum and tile. Stone and hard wood choices are really available for those die hard hobbyist that want a very realistic house, but hey when you want quality there is no better option.

Floor Trim for your Dollhouse

As you are building and tweaking your dollhouse you will discover some great time saving secrets. There are some great things that you can add to your house, and I just simply came across one that helped out a lot. This big discovery was floor trim. The discovery is not entirely new, or my own, there are many places to get doll trim, but I found the cheapest is a very thin flat balsa wood. I painted them white, which went with all the walls in my dollhouse, and attached them to the floors throughout the house. What I found is that they covered up the tiny bumps between the walls and the flooring. It also prevented the wall paper to come unglued because I was covering the bottom edges with the trim. I realize that this little invention, though not my own, really made my flooring look flush and neat against the wall.
