Making your Miniature House Better: Floor Trim

As you are building and tweaking your dollhouse you will discover some great time saving secrets. There are some great things that you can add to your house, and I just simply came across one that helped out a lot. I discovered the importance of having trim around your floor. You can buy many types of dollhouse trim through stores but what I found to be the cheapest and easiest is purchasing a long thin flat piece of balsa wood. I painted them white, which went with all the walls in my dollhouse, and attached them to the floors throughout the house. I was most impressed to not see any more tiny cracks between the wall and the flooring due to the trim covering it up. It also prevented the wall paper to come unglued because I was covering the bottom edges with the trim. I realize that this little invention, though not my own, really made my flooring look flush and neat against the wall.

Exterior Modeling: Getting the outside to look as good as the inside

When you have completed your dollhouse you will want people to admire the outside of your dollhouse just as much as they do the inside. The Paint of the dollhouse along with the look of the shingles is the first thing that you notice with your exterior. Three coats of high quality paint, recommended for dollhouses, is the minimum for dollhouse display. When you are applying the shingles first die them and then assemble them with ruler drawn lines to avoid mistakes. Bird houses, dog houses, gazebos, and more are other ways to spruce up your exterior. The exterior can even house subtle designs like a rock walkway, fountains, or flowers. And let us not forget the biggest advantage to designing the outside: the lights. Put some porch lights on, and if you have lit the inside it will make the glow through the windows appealing on the outside as well.

Design Tricks: Apply a Great Wallpaper Pattern Yourself

Though you may want to paint some of your walls, we recommend that you try wallpaper as it is a great substitute to paint and leaves a great look. Not only will the walls have a cute and distinct pattern, but the job will be done in a fraction of the time. Begin your searching for the perfect wallpaper with a hobby or craft store, and try not to be too overwhelmed as there are thousands of choices out there. There are many pre-cut easily stick wallpaper sheets with many varieties of styles. Don't forget, because you are looking for such a small portion you can even print your own wallpaper design. If you have a computer and a semi decent printer simply make a style that you are comfortable and print out a couple sheets. Scrap booker's will have all the necessary materials for you as well, so if you know anyone or if you are a scrap booker yourself look at your collection of paper and I am sure that something will work. Remember, you learn by doing, so start with something simple and create something amazing.

Flooring, Changing the Base of your House

There is one design item that is looked over more than anything else is flooring. Flooring is often overlooked because it is the base, but that only means that it is really the foundation for your furniture and design choices. Just as with new flooring in any house, new flooring in a dollhouse will increase the value and appeal. There are several types of flooring that you might want to consider: Carpet, linoleum, tile, stone, and/or hard wood. Carpet is a really fun choice, because it makes the kit seem like a miniature version of your house. A quick fix to bathroom or kitchen rooms is linoleum and tile. Stone and hard wood choices are really available for those die hard hobbyist that want a very realistic house, but hey when you want quality there is no better option.
