Matchless Minuscule Pieces: Design AdviceSubmitted by wentforthw Mon, 9 Mar 2009
Rearranging Furniture? Try Some New Strategies
Have you ever found yourself confused as to the correct layout of your dollhouse furniture? Here are a couple of placement strategies that may be of benefit to you. The two most common layout designs is the triangle and the square. In the triangle layout you will have three major pieces of furniture and place them at the ends of an imaginary triangle, each of the pieces are turned in and the look is very symmetrical. The second simple design layout is the square, very similar to the triangle except there are four pieces, and they again are placed on the corners of the square. The five pieces square is the same but one piece, usually the most prominent is placed in the middle. This is only the tip of the iceberg as you can allow your designs to envelop any arrangement of shapes. Accessories: The Little Touches The real fun with a kit or hobby of this sort is reveling in the small details. Accessories are the china in the kitchen, portraits for the walls, and the books in the bookcase. Using them for your interior design can really spruce up your house. Also, accessories add that lived in touch. And don't hold back, there are so many miniatures out there that there is no reason you cannot get exactly what you want. The secret touch of a great Dollhouse: Lights If you have completed a kit, furnished it, and are looking for another adventure then try lighting. Adding Lights removes your miniature set from being just another toy to a display item that will sit no longer in the toy box, but on the living room mantel. It is really a lot of fun to light your dollhouse and at the same time a challenge to learn new things. At the same time, isn't the challenge why we are in this hobby? When you break it down, lighting is simply connecting electricity through a wire and a plug. And to add upon that there are great step by step instructions that come with most kits to help you along the way. Don't expect to do it perfect the first time, try it out, make a mistake and learn from it. We recommend getting a small electrical kit to start, they are simple to set up and get started with. Remember whether you think you can or whether you think you can't you are right. Floor Trim for your Dollhouse As you are building and tweaking your dollhouse you will discover some great time saving secrets. There are some great things that you can add to your house, and I just simply came across one that helped out a lot. I discovered the importance of having trim around your floor. Floor Trim is not a new creation, but what I found is instead of buying it, to use a very thin balsa wood found in most craft stores. I applied this balsa wood to the floor of each of my walls to form a great outline along the bottom. I was most impressed to not see any more tiny cracks between the wall and the flooring due to the trim covering it up. It also prevented the wall paper to come unglued because I was covering the bottom edges with the trim. I realize that this little invention, though not my own, really made my flooring look flush and neat against the wall.
