Exterior Modeling: Getting the outside to look as good as the inside

The outside of the dollhouse has as much do to with the appeal, if not more, than the inside design. The first thing that everybody looks at is the paint and the shingles. To have a quality paint job on your house apply at least three coats of recommended paint. Make sure that you draw lines prior to applying shingles to preserve a straight look, most instruction booklets will provide the required measurements. There are many other ways to enjoy an attractive exterior; most of them are through accessories like dog houses, or gazebos. The exterior can even house subtle designs like a rock walkway, fountains, or flowers. Last but not least is the lighting of the exterior. Lights on exterior are commonly found on the porch, but you can place them pretty much wherever you would like to.

Designing with Linens

If you like detail, craft, and design then dollhouse design is a great opportunity to grow your talents. It is absolutely wonderful to be able to craft and design even the minute details of a doll's house. Fabrics and cloth is one awesome example as you can coordinate colors and have your favorites stand out. Bedrooms are a fabulous place to start. Just think of all the fabrics that you use in your own bedroom - Sheets, curtains, blankets, etc. Next is the dinning room where you can have your own napkins, dinning room table covers, seat covers, etc. From there we move to the bathroom where you can create your own shower curtains, toilet seat covers, and more. As I stated before, it is endless, so enjoy the possibilities!

Design Tricks: Apply a Great Wallpaper Pattern Yourself

Though you may want to paint some of your walls, we recommend that you try wallpaper as it is a great substitute to paint and leaves a great look. One of the major benefits to wallpaper is that you can not only add color quickly, but also add some contrast with the texture and color design. As far as the where and what kind of wallpaper options are out there you should start with a hobby website or store. There are many pre-cut easily stick wallpaper sheets with many varieties of styles. And remember, if you are even a tiny bit computer literate you can print your own dollhouse wallpaper styles and designs. Simply open a word document and create a pattern that will look great for your dollhouse and presto, homemade wallpaper!Scrap booker's will have all the necessary materials for you as well, so if you know anyone or if you are a scrap booker yourself look at your collection of paper and I am sure that something will work. Remember, you learn by doing, so start with something simple and create something amazing.

An Addition that can make a Big Difference

If you are a true crafter you are constantly tweaking your creations. There are some great things that you can add to your house, and I just simply came across one that helped out a lot. I discovered the importance of having trim around your floor. You can buy many types of dollhouse trim through stores but what I found to be the cheapest and easiest is purchasing a long thin flat piece of balsa wood. Simply paint it the color of your dollhouse and attach it to the foot of your walls. What I found is that they covered up the tiny bumps between the walls and the flooring. Another great thing about the trim is that it covers the edges of the wallpaper and prevents fraying. It was a little addition that was fun to install and really added to the look of my dollhouse.
