Designing by Mood

Great designers know that in order to have a good layout and design you need to strive for the appropriate mood. The mood of the room is chosen by the expectations of those that do, or plan to use it. One example of a mood is the dining room should be a place of meeting, where people can relax and talk to one another. A bedroom would have a personal setting to illustrate the mood of that individual and help them feel comfortable. Great dollhouses are no different. To tap into your mood settings, think about the purpose of the room, why it is their, and what designs, colors, furniture, would better suit that mood. When you tap into the mood you will know it, and the design of the room will just fall in place as if it was meant to be there all along.

Dollhouse Interior Plan Preparation

Plan your dollhouse design, and expect to follow that plan. A plan of action is crucial because it will keep you on a track leading to success. With miniature design a plan of action will consist of a floor plan and budget. A floor plan will consist of measurements, color, furniture pieces, and a good rough outline of the room. There are many room designs both online and off. Make sure that you are taking notes of great rooms that you see. If you see something in your notes worthy of changing your plan, then go ahead and do it. Once you have a good idea of what you would like you will need to budget accordingly. Remember, this is a hobby and constraining yourself to a budget allows control and happiness over your financial situation. In my opinion it is better to save up for a nice piece of furniture rather than going ahead with a cheap copy.

Using Size to your Benefit for Design

Always, always remember that there are different sizing elements in miniatures. Here are the sizing elements, there are three: Miniature scales, size of room dimensions, and comparative size. Miniature scaling refers to the fact that dolls and their furniture come in different sizing patterns. Meaning, you should check your dollhouse scale, if it is quarter inch you need quarter inch furniture. Size element is the second point, and this is as simple as making sure that your furniture will actually fit in the room. Take out a ruler and measure the square inches of the room and compare it to your incoming furniture dimensions. Lastly, the final point is the size of the furniture as it compares to other pieces around it. Larger pieces will have more of a prominence so if you really want to make your china cabinet pop you shouldn't make the dining room table so elaborate.

Modern, Victorian, Classical - The Standards of Design

When you first started this adventure of making, building, or designing your dollhouse, did you know what style you wanted it to be?Each piece of furniture will belong to a certain room, but you must also realize that each room should connect with each other. What you want to do is create a theme. In dollhouse furniture, kits and accessories there are three major themes that you could choose from. Victorian is the first major theme, it is recognized by the embellishments in furniture through long curved lines, elaborate fabric, and old fashioned pieces. Modern furniture is more technological, rigid, and fun - giving you options like Television sets, pool tables, and other modern pieces. The last is the traditional or classical style which will give you a standard look - Nothing to fancy or distinct of any era, but useful in filling your dollhouse.
