Sizing to Your Advantage

When setting up your dollhouse and buying furniture you will need to remember the three sizing constraints. The first one is the scale of the furniture, second is the size of the room, and third is the relative size of the furniture as it compares to other pieces of furniture. Miniature scaling refers to the fact that dolls and their furniture come in different sizing patterns. Meaning, look up the miniature size of your dollhouse kit, if it is one inch scale then you need to buy one inch furnitureThe second is room size: or simply not cramming furniture into the room that will not fit. Make sure that you measure your furniture room and are aware of the dimensions of the furniture that you buy. The last point is relative size; this means that within a room you can coordinate the pieces. Smaller pieces will get less attention than other pieces, and the larger pieces should be the ones that you want everyone to look at.

How Many? The reality of that question applied to Miniatures

There is a common question that is asked when getting miniatures: How many pieces of dollhouse furniture should I put in my room?It depends on the size of the room and what you are trying to say. First of all you are not going to want to cram any room with furniture, it is wasteful and distasteful. Second, the more stuff that you put in the more fresh clean space that you will be left without. You must realize that space itself can have its own designing capabilities. If you notice a space balanced room your eye is more relaxed as it doesn't have to weed out the mess. On the other hand if you have too much space then you simply ask: Is that it?At the end of the day you will have to come to that balance on your own.

Designing with Linens

Once you understand that anything and everything can change, be created, or designed in your dollhouse it opens up tons of potential. The shear amount of detail can be both overwhelming and exiting. A great example is using linens to coordinate your dollhouse design, and make things pop. The bedroom is an excellent demonstration of detail and the breadth of items that you can create. Just think of all the fabrics that you use in your own bedroom - Sheets, curtains, blankets, etc. In addition to the bedroom just think of the dinning room rug, curtains, and even napkins! In the bathroom you have towels, floor mats, shower curtains, etc. Now I hope that you can see the unending possibilities that await your linens, cloths, and fabric designs.

Flooring, Changing the Base of your House

Flooring is a very interesting topic because no one really thinks to change it, and yet those that do always turn out more amazing than before. Undoubtedly Flooring is the foundation of your dollhouse, and as such is the foundation for all of your design choices. Not only that, it adds a very distinct touch that will take your dollhouse and move it to the next level. There are several types of flooring that you might want to consider: Carpet, linoleum, tile, stone, and/or hard wood. Carpet is a really fun choice, because it makes the kit seem like a miniature version of your house. The next set of flooring options that are popular are tile, and linoleum - a great touch for a smooth surface and an interesting color. Adding Stone for your deck, hardwood for your living room will add a fun touch - look around and find the best option!
