Origin of carrom

Submitted by sreejos
Wed, 2 May 2007

Origin of this game called carrom is quite obscure. Majority of sources states that the game has been originated in India, while some believe it originated in Portugal and even in Burma. In the West, where the game is regularly a like to billiards-type games, it might have in parallel developed in different cases as a mixture of billiards and shuffleboard. Irrespective of this, carrom today is among the world’s favorite indoor games, taken pleasure by friends and families worldwide. Just same as to the billiards, marbles and air hockey in various ways, it is simple to understand, fun to play, and suitable for children and adults alike.

Despite being confidential an indoor "board game", it is fairly exclusive in own self - neither like dice games such as Monopoly, and nor same as policy games such as Chess. In fact, it is much more, linking a mixture of both physical and mental elements.

The arrival of expert carrom event over the past few decades and the arrangement of federations all over the Western world have given kick to thousands of serious carrom players, so spreading its fame even further. Yet, there is no doubt a long way to go before "carrom" becomes a family game, with millions of people universally who haven't even heard the name.

Carrom is normally played by two or four people. Two needs to play opposite to each other, in case of four, players should sit opposite two are partners. As an exception case, even three members could play this game against each other for points. Arrange the carrom men on the middle circle of the carrom board, with the red recognized as the “queen” at the centre. The whites need to be lined up to make a “Y” shape, with two sides aiming straight towards the pockets given at the corner.

Although carrom boards could be stored flat or upright on their side, shun leaning your board against a fiery radiator, as it could even cause damage to the polished surface and even effect in distorting of the plywood. Use a soft dry cloth to clean the surface before to each game session. Keep the surface well powdered in order to avoid any harm to board surface due to abrasion. Avoid contact to extreme temperatures (hot or cold) and moisture or dampness.
