With the emergence of technology, many things have changed even the postal system. Postage stamps can now be bought and printed through the use of your computer. You may think that postage stamp collecting may be dead. Well, think again. Stamp collecting is still alive. If you decide to start collecting postage stamps now, it is still not too late. Here are some tips and guidelines for you.

You are not required to study the stamps but you may want to have a little background on what you are collecting. The first stamp to be issued was in Britain in 1840, it featured the picture of a young Queen Victoria. It was called the Black Penny. This stamp is scarce nowadays but you can still purchase the Penny Black from other postage stamp collectors.

Stamp collecting was first done by children and adults thought of it as a childish pursuit nut as time went on, adults began to get interested with stamp collecting and studied these postage stamps which led to collecting postage stamps. Postage stamp collecting is the most popular hobby in the world.

If you want to start collecting postage stamps, here are some tips for you. The first way to do it is find some from the mail your family and relatives received over the years. You may also ask your friends for their stamps. Although the postage stamps from your family and friends are definitive, they can fill up several pages of your stamp collection. If you are looking for rare stamps, you can obtain them from other stamp collectors.

You must also have the proper stamp collecting tools. You must have a stock book where you are going to place your postage stamp collection, stamp hinges, magnifying glasses, stamp tongs and a desk blotter.

Stamp hinges are popular as a mounting method. Stamp hinges are rectangular pieces of paper that is coated with a mild gum. The hinge keeps the stamps on the page and will allow the collector to view the back page of the stamps for watermarks or expert marks.

Stock books are used in stamp collecting as storage for the stamps. Stock books contain several stiff pages on it. Usually the book is double sided. Stock books may let a collector arrange their collections properly but the disadvantage with these stock books is that when it is mishandled, the stamps can also fall out from the stock book.

The magnifying glass is used to magnify the stamps to be able to see more details on the stamps. The desk blotter is where all the stamp tools and equipment s are stored neatly.

Stamp tongs are tweezers used for stamp collecting. Tweezers are used in handling the postage stamps so that these postage stamps cannot get soiled and damage the stamps.
