Have you ever wanted to play the piano for your own enjoyment, for a family get together, for weddings or church? I always heard about people who played piano music by ear. Honestly, I thought it was something only the gifted piano players could do. Can the average person learn how to play piano by ear?

You can learn how to play your favorite songs on the piano without the need to learn how to read music first! A lot of people who play the piano can't play without the music in front of them. If you want to learn how to play piano by ear you must learn to combine the three elements of music.

The Tune

The Tune is the melody. For example when you hum the song twinkle twinkle little star you're humming a melody. If you can hum a tune, you can take that tune and reproduce it on a piano or keyboard, simply by going up (higher) when the song you're humming goes up, and down (lower) when the song you are humming moves lower.

The Chords

A Chord is the harmonic background to a Melody. You must learn how to construct chords, and then determine the likelihood of chord progressions. In other words, which chord comes next. You only need to know 3 in order to harmonize a melody.

The Rhythm

To learn how to play piano by ear you have to learn rhythmic patterns. Rhythmic patterns are simple patterns of hand movements that can be played anywhere on the piano or keyboard. Rhythmic patterns can be played over any chord and any song. A rhythm can be simple or complex.

Learning how to play the piano is something that takes a lot of patience and effort- in fact, even the professionals practice every single day. The old ways of teaching people piano can be really frustrating! Don't waste hundreds of hours (and dollars) doing work that takes YEARS to reap even the smallest of benefits of playing the piano.
