Understand the Techniques behind a Good Oil Painting

Submitted by annajosephs

Are you having problem beginning your oil painting? If you can hold a paintbrush you can discover how to oil paint any subject you want. Oil painting is straightforward, far simpler than etching or even watercolor painting. If you can see something, you can paint it in oils.

Oil painting seems to be easy among all other painting but its duifficult to get the qaulity oil painting unless an untill the artist do not understand all the techniques of oil painting. Artists who are concerned with making permanent paintings should consider carefully the quality of all layers of their paintings. They should be as concerned about the layers they do not see (size and ground) as the layers they do see (oil colors, painting mediums and varnish).

There are some very good paints on the market today like Grumbacher Artist Oils, but Winsor & Newton oil paints are also quite popular. There are different grades of paint. But where to make proper use of this color one should have that knowledge.

Oil painting relies on more planning because artists must consider form and color simultaneously. A few guidelines
1. Paint from light to dark
2. Vary brush marks from long stroke to short mark (like
Cezanne's) to stippling, etc
3. Scrubbing in multiple directions
4. Scumbling with a near dry brush
5. Thick opaque under painting as an initial layer
6. Thin transparent glazes to modify that under painting

Among the many choices, consider:
• Paint the background to the foreground
• Mix the colors primarily on the palette or on the canvas
• Begin with the middle tones and gradually increase the contrast
• Tint = pure color + white (Add white to pure color and make tints.)
• Shade = pure color + black (Add black to pure color and make shade.)
• Tone = pure color + white + black (Add black to tints and make tone.)

The beginner can start there painting with using student grade paints and professional artiest make use of professional grades, as the colors are more brilliant than student grade paints. It's ok in the beginning to purchase a lesser quality for learning and experimentation. You can paint very good oil painting by understanding all the technical points.
