10 Things You Didn’t Know About Sound InsulationSubmitted by mjjames1 Tue, 18 Nov 2008
If you want to make sure that your neighbours can’t hear you, or you are involved in construction a new building, then perhaps you’ll want to know more about sound insulation.
1. Sound insulation is highly important. All buildings such as hotels, houses and offices rely on sound insulation to ensure that sound from one room doesn’t carry into another where it is not wanted. 2. The noise from music or voices is different to that caused by footfall. Noise is absorbed by adequate sound insulation on the walls and ceiling, whilst the noise of footfall is absorbed by the floor. 3. Ceiling sound insulation is fitted to the ceiling, and helps to absorb noise created in the room so that it doesn’t carry to the floor above. 4. Sound insulation for walls is designed so that noise doesn’t spill into the next room. This is just as important in hotels, and offices as it is new houses. 5. Floor insulation is designed to absorb the sound of footfall, and other traffic around the room. If you’ve ever been in a hotel, or flat and you could hear the conversation from the room above, then you will understand the importance of floor insulation. 6. Health and Safety regulations state that people have a right to carry out their daily life free from unwanted noise. This includes the noise from the neighbours in their flat as much as it applies to workers in a factory. 7. Building regulations determine how efficient new builds and refurbished building must be. Sound insulation must meet or exceed these regulations. 8. Most sound insulation is designed to be easy to install, and will come with advice and installation guides. Incorrect fitting the insulation could mean that it is ineffective. However, as with any sort of construction work, you may prefer to leave it to specialised, experienced professionals. 9. Whether you need specialist flooring boards, or ceiling joists or battens to hold ceiling joists, there are several ways to ensure that sound doesn’t travel from one room to another. If you are not sure what you need, then the suppliers will be able to advise you to ensure that you get exactly the right products. 10. Sound insulation can be designed and manufactured to meet your exact needs. Perhaps you are refurbishing an old building that wasn’t designed with the neighbours in mind, or you are adding a home cinema. Each project will have different requirements. If you’re involved in the building process, why not see what else sound control can do for you?
