Moving into your first home? Chances are you\'re getting confused with all the decisions-which color to paint it, what kind of furniture to buy, which room to use as the bedroom and guest room. But before you go there, you may want to sit down and do a bit of planning. A lot of homeowners go straight into stocking up and end up with either too much, too many, or all the wrong items. To help you make the right choices, here are four tips worth keeping in mind.

1. Do your measurements. Before hitting the shops, make sure you have a solid idea of how much space you have to spare. You don\'t want to make a major purchase only to find out that it\'s the wrong size. This is especially important for windows and furniture. Decide where you want your furniture to go, and measure the space so you know what size to get. The same goes for curtains, blinds and other window treatments.

2. Make a floor plan. To spare yourself all the moving and hauling, plan out each room in detail before buying anything. That way, everything only has to be moved once-you don\'t have to rearrange the room every time you change your mind. Take into account the location of the windows and heating vents (you\'ll want to keep them clear), the space allotted for traffic, and the furniture you need versus the ones that can wait till later.

3. Invest in storage. A lot of people overlook this important feature when outfitting their homes. Obviously, the amount of storage you need depends on how much stuff you have-but it won\'t hurt to get some extra for when you accumulate. Keep storage spaces where they\'re most accessible so you avoid clutter and keep from misplacing everyday items.

4. Stock your kitchen. Most of the shopping that goes into a new home is for the kitchen. From cookware and utensils to pots, pans and stoves, there are lots of things to keep in mind. Start by buying the basics, and make sure to invest in quality cookware. Starter kits are rarely worth the money; just get the pieces you need and take advantage of your choices.
