If you go air conditioning shopping, you will realize there are quite a few different systems out there. So how do you know which air conditioning system to choose? It can be a little daunting to say the least. Below is the main types of air conditioners available, with a description of the advantages and disadvantages of each type.

1. Box Or Window Units - Box or window units are the cheaper air conditioning units sometimes found in motels and apartments. They are good at air conditioning one room only. They are a cheap and easily available option. Sometimes these box units come in cooling only, whilst others come in both cooling and heating forms. The main problems with these units are that they can be a little noisy and they are a little ugly looking. They will also only air condition the room they are located in.

2. Wall Split Or Ductless - These units look like long thin slender boxes that sit on a wall. They can come in cooling only models but more frequently they can both cool and heat. Similar to the window units, they can really only be relied upon to cool and heat the room they are located in. They are more expensive than a window unit, but are quieter and more powerful. Wall split units also designed by many well known brand names, and there are also stylish, thinner models available to match a modern homes decor.

3. Ducted Evaporative - Ducted evaporative systems are a good cheap way to cool your entire home. They are often also used in factories as they are robust and good at cooling large areas. Evaporative coolers are also relatively cheap to install and to run. The main disadvantages with evaporative coolers is that they do not offer any heating, they bring moisture into your home and they will not work in humid weather.

4. Central Air Conditioning/Reverse Cycle (Ducted) - Ducted reverse cycle systems are the best systems available. They can usually heat or cool about half of your home at any one time. They offer a more precise level of comfort, they are reliable and can be used all year round. The main disadvantage with this system is it expensive to both install and to run. As mentioned previously, they usually only have enough capacity to run about half your home at one time which can be a problem if most the rooms are being occupied.

5. Portable Heater/Cooler - Portable air conditioning systems are the units you see for sale at your local shops. They are cheap to buy and easy to find. The problem with these units are that they cost a lot to run and do very little to actually heat or cool your home, and therefore are best to be avoided.

If you follow these tips you will be sure to get a great air conditioning system. Simply work out what your after, then pick the option that best fills your needs.
