Buying a ducted reverse cycle air conditioner is a big decision to make. It is one of the most expensive items you will ever purchase in your life. The following article has some essential hints and tips on how to run your air conditioning system and how to get the most out of it.

The main maintenance you need to perform for a reverse cycle (refrigerative) ducted air conditioning system is to clean the filter located in the return air grille. The return air grille is the big grille that sucks the air back into your system and can usually be found in a hallway or wall.

To clean the filter you must first open the return air grille. Once you have opened this grille, you can either pull the filter out or clean it whilst still in the grille. You can clean it by either a quick vacuum or by washing with warm soapy water.

Ultimately, you should aim to clean the filter at least once every 3 months. If your system starts to cool/heat less than normal or if the return air grille becomes noisy it is also a good sign that the filter needs a clean. Proper maintenance will ensure your system remains powerful and will also increase your air conditioners life span.

To save on running costs, set your air conditioner to average settings. Some people put the temperatures to extremes thinking it will cool/heat a room quicker. All this does is prevent the unit from cycling off which will ultimately cause your running costs to go through the roof.

To also save on running costs, you should always run as little zones as you need to. The less of your house you run at once the cheaper your unit will be to run. It will also place less pressure on your unit which will also increase it's lifespan.

Finally, try to keep the area around the air conditioners outdoor unit clean and free from debris. Give the outdoor unit a quick hose down every few months to keep it clean and to try to limit any rust build up.

If you adhere to these hints and tips you are sure to get many years of peace and comfort from your reverse cycle air conditioning system.
