Choosing a Closet Design Company

Submitted by Ellen Hamm

Hiring a closet designer or organization specialist is a great idea if you want to create a high end closet or get your closet organized. You can spend anywhere from hundreds of dollars to thousands upgrading a closet. It is a good idea to do your research and ask the right questions when you get an estimate so that you are able to get the best closet with the most useful features within your budget.

First, ask yourself what you hope to accomplish with the new closet design and have these points written down for the designer. Think about what function you want the closet to have. You may be hoping to save space, create storage areas, make a spot for everything, or move all of your clothing from dressers into the closet. If the designer knows what you're hoping for, you'll get a custom design that works for you.

Before the designer comes, start getting rid of what you don't need. The designer will need to inventory your things and divide them into categories before they can begin. There's no use in having them try to make space for things that you aren't going to use anymore. It can be a waste of time, space, and even money.

Ask the designer to also look at your things that you will keep in the closet in the opposite season. If you have a closet designed to perfectly hold your summer clothes, then what will you do when it's time to take out your bulky winter clothes and coats? Get everything set up and even separated into piles so that the designer can take all of your clothing into consideration when they work on your design. They may even be able to come up with a storage solution for your out of season clothes that you haven't thought of before.

Most companies will do an estimate for free, so it may be a good idea to have several companies come in for estimates and ideas. Ask questions about materials and the pros and cons of each type before you decide. You can spend a lot of money on accessories like tie racks, valet rods, pull out pants drawers and more. However, your money would be better spent on quality construction. You can actually use high end hangers to organize little things like swimwear, belts, ties and scarves.

When you've got your closet designed, don't forget to budget for some good, durable clothes hangers. Cedar hangers are the ultimate, benefiting you in many ways. They deodorize, absorb moisture, and they're beautiful. Your hangers can serve certain purposes, like helping your clothing keep its shape or saving you closet space. Investing in good hardware, good building materials, and some high quality hangers will help you to create a closet that will be beautiful and useful for many years to come.
