Climate-Friendly Design for Homeowners

Submitted by neillisa

When you set out to design your home, what\'s the first thing you think of? Most homeowners would say budget, lifestyle, floor space, or their personal tastes. But while these are all important factors, there\'s one thing that people tend to overlook: climate. The weather around your home can greatly affect your design options, from flooring and paint to even the smallest accessories. And sometimes, conditions vary even within the same street.

If you\'re working on a full remodel, now\'s the best time to rethink your flooring choices. Not all floors work for all climates, and the wrong choice can end up costing you thousands over the years. Solid wood and hardwood floors are especially susceptible to climate changes. If you\'re not sure which materials work best for your home, ask your dealer about acclimatized floors-those that have been exposed to extreme temperatures to make them more stable.

Another thing that climate can affect is the choice between paint and wallpaper. Some types of paint can peel off easily when exposed to moisture, so if you get a lot of rainfall, you may want to get wallpaper or invest in a higher-quality brand of paint. If you\'re going for wallpaper, make sure it\'s the thick, heavy-duty kind so it can stand up to constant temperature changes.

Colors can sometimes darken or lighten, according to the amount of sunlight the room gets. That\'s why some rooms can appear brighter than others, even if you used the same color scheme and floor plan. It rarely affects quality or performance, but it does get in the way of consistency. If the color changes bother you, you can keep them even by rearranging your furniture from time to time, or installing colored drapes in the summer and spring seasons.

Finally, consider investing in an indoor dehumidifier. Indoor humidity is one of the main causes of structural damage, and keeping it controlled can help your flooring and wall paint last longer. This can come in handy especially if you get drastic temperature changes throughout the year. Place it somewhere with good ventilation so it doesn\'t get clogged up.

Climate is one of the most important yet most overlooked factors in home design. Local weather changes can dictate how well your home structures can hold up over the years. Read on for some tips on climate-friendly design.
