Compensating For Your Growing Needs in a Garage

Submitted by HiTech

There probably isn't a family in America who hasn't outgrown the primary home at one point or another. In fact, the lack of space is one of the prime reasons why many of us hire a contractor to improve our homes. We want a better design, we want more space, and we want both of those things at a reasonable price.

Fortunately, you can have all three of those things! Your contractor can give you a better design, more space, AND a great price to expand your living area as your needs grow. And one of the best places to start with is a garage of your very own!

Why the Garage?

Of course, garages have traditionally served as compartments for automobiles, yard tools and a few toys thrown about here and there. But you can work with a contractor and design a brand new one (or modify an existing one) that will compensate for your need for more storage space and keep you organized as well.

Reasons That Justify More Garage Space

For example, your contractor can help you design and build a garage that has a separate room and entrance for your garden tools and a separate room for toys and bikes, including plenty of space for one or two of your vehicles.

Although your ultimate goal may be to create more storage space, you contractor will also work with you to ensure you have easy access to your things and to the activities that you'll do with those things. You'll want to access your cars without having to squeeze in-between tight spaces. You'll want enough room to test the tools that you repair without having to lift them up over your head and then haul or drag them outside to the yard. Re-designing your garage can eliminate a lot of these inconveniences and on a busy weekend, it can save you a lot of time.

Ideas for Storage Areas

Essentially, your contractor will evaluate how you operate within your garage and help you determine the best placement for things. That placement might warrant an extra closet, swing-open doors, or a row of small but easily accessible wall cabinets.

Another idea may be to divide a section of a garage into an upper section and a lower section. The upper section might resemble a small attic and store things that aren't used on a regular basis, but once or twice a year instead.

Additional storage space in the form of walk-in closets could also be created along each side of a garage. To provide easy access to the contents inside, your contractor can build them so that their doors open in a direction that doesn't conflict with your regular traffic pattern.

These of course are just a few ideas. Only you and your contractor can determine the best design for your garage. The important thing is that the both of you work together to create more space for your growing needs.
