Ten years ago, countertops were almost purely functional. They were there to support the sink and hold all your kitchen and bath items, and hardly anything else. These days, however, they serve both a decorative and functional purpose and have become a vital part of home décor. Whether you\'re starting from scratch or simply updating the look of your home, a well-chosen countertop is sure to give it that visual boost.

Often, the first choice you\'ll have to make is the countertop material. Tile and stone are no longer your only options; you can now choose from a range of hardwoods, specialized stones, and synthetic materials that all have their own pros and cons. This is where you\'ll have to do your homework. Think about what the countertop will be used for, and compare different materials to see which ones best fit the purpose.

For kitchen countertops, make sure to take the kitchen environment into account. Kitchens tend to be hot, moist and busy, so you\'ll need a countertop that can stand up to it. A waterproof material such as granite may work well, but since it\'s heavy, you may need to check your counter foundation. If you\'re not sure how to choose, it may be better to consult a professional so you\'ll avoid costly mistakes.

Bathroom counters don\'t get used as much, but that doesn\'t mean you can forgo quality. Like the kitchen, bathrooms are exposed to high humidity and moisture, which can easily damage a lower-quality counter. Choose a bathroom countertop with a low-maintenance finish and a water-resistant surface. Since most households clean the kitchen more often than the bath, you\'ll need a material that can take care of itself.

Design-wise, counters offer a wide range of options both for baths and kitchens. It all depends on what you want the space to look like, and how big a role the countertop plays in the overall design. Often, a big counter will set the color scheme for the rest of the room, so you\'ll need to choose your colors carefully. A safe solution is to just match the color of your floor, so that it looks consistent and has that unified, professional-looking appeal.
