Design is Paramount - Break the BoundariesSubmitted by wallunit Thu, 20 Aug 2009
There's a chain of shop in Tokyo that specializes in plush life-size cushions. Spend a half hour in one of these stores and you'll see why there's a non-stop 24/7 flow of customers going in and out of the shop. The cushions are gy-normous and are bright eclectic chaotic colors. Bright pinks and reds and psychedelic globs and turquoise sunsets, and zebra stripped and covered in orange spots. But it's not really about the color. It's about the sheer and absolute fantasy comfort. Here's what you're supposed to do, but not everybody gets this first time round. You need to stand with your back to the cushion and just let yourself go, and then you'll fall into a cushion of softness that squiggles under you and moulds into your body shape. People have no shame. They'll stop by on their way home from work just to steal a moment of pure relaxation. And the employees embrace this concept of comfort. They are as comfortable with the whole process.
They just smile and say, "Welcome back". More and more companies are trying to duplicate some of the same in their office spaces. It's no longer good enough to have a professional-looking communal space, where your staff can meet with clients. It's not behind the glass walls that business knows no boundaries. It's in the spaces where boundaries are broken, and design is paramount. If you are looking to create a state-of-the-art office environment, you need to think out of the book. Take a look at what your clients are doing. Does it work for you? Take note of the times you leave somebody's office, well over your scheduled appointment timeslot. That's a sure sign that you felt you were in the right environment to do business. Take note of the times that you were in and out of somebody's office under the time allotted for your meeting. That'd count as an office decor red alert. People do business with people they like, in settings they like. You're unlikely to do business with someone that you take an instant dislike to. The same standard applies if you're supposed to sign a contract on a table that has a stack of business cards stuck under one of the legs.
