My son learned a hard lesson about checking references when hiring a contractor. For years I have been telling him to get different quotes and check references. He thinks he knows better, that he can tell who to trust just by talking with them. Well he learned the hard way. He owns a few homes that he rents out in Brooklyn. They were investments. All three homes had tenants when he purchased the properties. Two of the tenants moved out and the homes needed some repairs and clean up.

He found a Residential Painting Brooklyn contractor's flyer in his mail box. It offered a free quote and a 10% discount on residential painting. He decided he would get his home and the three rental properties painted at the same time. He did not bother getting quotes from other Residential Painting Brooklyn contractors. He paid a 15% down payment to the residential painting company for all four homes. Then the residential painting contractor did not show up to do the homes. The so called residential painting company did not exist. The phone number on the flyer was to a cell. There was no way to find the guy who took his money. He spent about a month trying to track down the residential painting contractor. The Police said that it was a common scam they have been warning people about. Lesson learned, I think.

The houses still needed to be painted. He wanted to get them done quickly. He did not want to try and rent until the painting was done. This time he was smart about it. He contacted several recommended Residential Painting Brooklyn contractors. He compared quotes and checked the references. He ended up getting a great residential painting company to do the work for him. He got a deal because he was having all four homes done. From now on he is treating the rental homes as a business. He is going to always get quotes and reference just like he would at work.
