Easy Home Tips On Draining And Plumbing

Everyone likes the idea of saving a little bit of money, and if you are in a place where you want to make sure that you don't just flush your money away, there are a few things that you can keep in mind about your plumbing. While there are certainly some things that do need to be left to the professionals, you'll find that there are also plenty of money-saving tricks and tips that you can use to keep an eye on your home's toilets and sink. Before you call the problem, check out some of these great solutions.

1.Get a plunger
You might be surprised at how many problems can be solved with a simple, five dollar plunger. This is a tool that can be used on sinks, tubs and toilets. For a sink, fill it with some water and plunge it for a while; you'll be surprised at how many clogs it can dislodge. If you are trying this on a double sink, make sure that the other drain is plugged so that the pressure doesn't just release. Similarly, when you are plunging the bathtub, plug up the overflow for the same reason.

2.Get a snake or a closet auger
If you live in a home that is more cranky and more prone to stoppages, it might be worth your while to get started and pick up a plumber snake, which is a long and flexible steel cable that you can wind and unwind on a spool with a hand crank. This will allow you to clear out most drains and toilets with ease. You may also be interested in getting a closet auger, which is essentially the same thing but built especially for toilets.

3.Coat hanger on your bathtub
When you are having problems with your bathtub, there is a good chance that you are in a place where there is hair getting caught in there. Remember that using a screen over the drain can be quite a life saver. Start with a plunger, but if there is something that tells you that it is something looser that might not be dislodged with pressure, consider a bent coat hanger. This can go a long way towards getting stubborn rats of hair out of your drain.

4.Complete Drain Failure
If all the drains in the home are clogged or backed up, you'll find that you may be dealing with something like the main drain going into your home, or the drain between the house and the sewer or the septic tank is clogged up. Look for the cleanout at the farthest end of the drain, and this is generally where you can feed an auger in without needing to worry about dealing with any of the traps that might be in the way. Using an electric auger is preferred, and if necessary, you can look into renting one.

5.Remove the trap
In many cases, you will simply be able to remove the trap, which may be known as the U-bend, in a sink. If you can do this, you'll find that it is ease itself to remove whatever is clogging the drain. Take some time and make sure that you have a bucket underneath to catch any debris or water that comes out.
