Easy Tricks for Updating Your Deck

You've cleaned and repainted your deck, maybe added a couple planters, but somehow, it still lacks pizzazz. Deck styles and accessories have changed considerably in the last few years. Think back to the last time you bought your table or umbrella; if it was more than 5 years ago, it could be, your deck needs some updating.

Here are a few ideas to help get you started. Some involve structural changes, while others will provide a quick pick-me-up for very little effort or cost.

Adding unusual shapes to a deck creates interest and adds a sense of style. Cut off the corners or create a kidney bean shape and voila, your deck becomes an artistic focal point. Instead of the boring rectangular trellis, get creative and shape it with curves or a wave design.

Alternately, when choosing patio furniture, the square look is definitely in. It's a sleek contemporary style that looks great with solid colored cushions and bright accent pillows. Although the fabric looks too nice for outside, it's actually weather-resistant and resists fading.

If you're building or redesigning a current deck, consider adding levels that step down from one another. Each area can have it's own purpose, such as cooking, seating, dining, etc. Have group seating areas, and other more intimate spots with only two chairs and a small table.

Use paint to add punch to your deck. A colorful deck floor or brightly painted furniture makes an otherwise ho hum deck stand out. Old metal furniture and wooden muskoka chairs take on a new life when painted in bright green, turquoise or red.

Add a pergola or cover to your seating area. Not only does it protect your furniture, but gives the impression of another room. Once again, add interest by using an arch design or curved lines. You'll appreciated being able to take cover from the sun while eating dinner.

Decks no longer look like outdoor additions. Now, the trend is to make them appear as extensions of your indoor living space. Use cozy living room type seating, complete with area rug, coffee table and end tables. Include accents such as indoor style lighting, and hang a mirror and pictures. You can even install windows in a faux wall to be used as a divider.

If you're planning on adding a concrete patio, consider using patterned concrete with stain for a splash of color.

Add to your BBQ area by creating an outdoor cooking station. Add a brick or stone counter with cabinets for holding dishes and glasses. Add a small bar fridge to keep cold beverages close at hand.

Make use of complementary colors when you are decorating. A simple teak or white patio set should have bright accent pillows and corresponding umbrella.

Add outdoor fabric curtains tied together at posts or use bamboo screens for privacy.

Include the relaxing sound of water with the addition of a fountain. Depending on your space restrictions, there are a number of portable fountains that can be added to a corner, or even hung from a wall.

Don't forget to add touches of fresh flowers and plenty of container bouquets.
