Changing to a green energy policy means that your electricity is coming from a renewable source. These new green policies will cost you more, but if enough people choose to switch to these policies, it will provide enough of a market incentive for the major suppliers to start investing heavily in renewables.

Many domestic electricity suppliers now offer green-friendly policies. Switching to one of these policies is a lot more affordable than switching to a completely green energy supplier. From April 2004, UK energy companies have had to ensure that a minimum of 4.9% of the energy they provide has been sourced from renewable sources.

Some British energy companies are doing better than others with this target, so have a look at some energy company websites and choose a supplier whom you are convinced is doing their bit or the evironment.

Some companies who have not reached their 4.9% target have chosen to buy certificates from smaller green energy-only companies or companies who have bettered the 4.9% target. However, this system does not increase overall demand for renewable energies, so look out for companies who operate in this way.

There are a number of companies who now offer green-only energy, and that number is growing every day. As demand increases, not only will the environment be better protected, but policy prices will begin to fall too. Here are just a few of those energy suppliers who only offer green policies:

Good Energy - Good Energy only use renewable electricity too, so this really is as green as it gets.

Green Energy 100 - If you're looking for an ethically-minded provider, this forward-thinking company ticks all the boxes. As well as providing green energy for their customers, Green Energy 100 invests 50% of its profits to the production of green electricity.

Some of the more well known energy companies now offer their own green tariffs alongside their traditional energy policies. Below we've listed what's on offer from a few of the UK's biggest energy providers:

Npower - Proof that major energy providers are starting to take this issue seriously, Npower now offer their own green service, called Juice. Now for every unit of electricity you buy from them under this policy, they will supply one unit of green electricity.

Powergen and London Energy - Both of these companies now offer to match every unit of electricity supplied to its green policies with one from a renewable electricity source.
