Whenever you set out to buy or rent, you need to make a note to do a Mold Inspection. Whether its commercial or residential properties the possibility of mold caused from continual dampness always exist. We are all used to the mold that occasionally builds up in the bathrooms. However, you need to inspect the roof for leaks. The plumbing under sinks and around tubs. The area where the washer and dryer is located. If there is a basement, you need to check the walls, floors, drains and dark corners for the chance of water settling and sitting for any length of time. A damp dark place is home to most mold problems. You also need to check the air filter, ductwork, and vents of the heating/ac system. If they seem to be in need of cleaning then turn off the system while you are doing this maintenance.
There are over 1.5 million varieties of mold. Mold has been proven to cause a large number of respiratory and neurological illnesses. The Stachybotrys and Penicillium/Aspergillus are the most troublesome to the young and elderly. You will usually spot the mold by its characteristic moist black area causing paint to peel off the wall. Or you may find a green and black fuzzy looking fungus growing in corners where water accumulates. You will recognize the musty smell of mold, if it has been allowed to grow unchecked.
The best way to clean mold is to mix a small amount of household bleach in a bucket of water and wash down the affected area. On the other hand, for smaller areas, you can use a spray bottle to apply the bleach water. Let it set for a bit to allow it to kill off the fungus.
Always be sure to wear appropriate mask and gloves to protect you while cleaning.
