Gas and Electricity Supply When You Move HomeSubmitted by davesabri@googlemail.com Mon, 22 Jun 2009
It can be very stressful to move house, but you need to remember to sort out your gas and electricity suppliers. If you forget about them you could be billed for energy you have not used at either property. Here is a brief guide to tell you what to do.
Firstly, get in touch with your current supplier in advance to tell them you will be moving. When you leave your old house the last thing you should do is to take readings from the gas and electricity meters. Give the readings to your old suppliers so they can calculate your final bill. Likewise, when you get into your new property make sure the first thing you do is to take meter readings. The previous occupant might have forgotten to do this so you could end up paying for gas and electricity they have used. Tell the supplier at your new home you have moved in and give them the readings. If you are not sure who the suppliers are at your new property, then you can contact the Meter Point Administration Service to discover who supplies the electricity, and call xoserve to find out your gas supplier. You can get the numbers for your local offices from directory enquiries. If you get a bill in the old occupier's name, you should contact the company that sent the bill as soon as possible. If your first bill is in your name but appears to be for the wrong amount, this could be because the supplier has used an estimated reading to calculate your bill. A phone call to give new meter readings should get this sorted out. It is a good idea to compare all the tariffs available to you in your new home. There could be different energy companies available to you at your new address, and you might be able to get cheaper prices. For simplicity, consider getting a dual fuel deal where your electricity and gas are supplied by the same company. For example, British Gas has various dual fuel deals which are a lot cheaper than many other separate gas and electricity providers. If you want to know which suppliers are available in your area, the easiest thing to do is look online. There are lots of price comparison websites which will help you find out the best deals available. Just enter your postcode and details of your average energy consumption, and you should get a number of options to choose from.
British Gas are the largest electricity supplier in the United Kingdom, providing their services to more areas than anyone else. As well as this they officially have the cheapest energy in the UK on average, take a look at their electricity prices online now.
