Home Design Myths

Submitted by neillisa

Like any other creative field, home design is always in flux-what may be fashionable today may be out of style tomorrow. But there are a few rules that always hold true, and many myths that people continue to believe. These design myths not just result in unattractive homes; they also tend to disrupt foot traffic, cramp the space, and generally make the home uncomfortable. Below are some of the most common myths in home design and how you can avoid them.

Kitchens are just workspaces.

Designers call the kitchen the heart of the home, and not just because it\'s where you make your food. Nowadays, the kitchen has evolved into a gathering place for the whole family and a place for everyone to relax at the end of the day. Although function remains a priority over design, it\'s also important to make your kitchen warm and welcoming.

Everything has to be color-coordinated.

A carefully planned color scheme can make your home look like it came right out of a catalog: staged, unreal, and rather impersonal. While it\'s nice to have a theme, don\'t be afraid to break out of the mold once in a while. If there\'s an accessory you want, go ahead and use it-the contrast can give your home character and make it more "you."

Walls have to be a uniform color.

When you\'re stuck between two color choices, don\'t limit yourself to just one. Many designers are leaning towards a two-tone color scheme where two opposite walls are painted a different color from the other two. This can be a great solution when two people can\'t agree on a room color, or when you can\'t decide which color should be dominant.

Floors can\'t be stylish.

Today\'s floors play a much bigger role in home design than ever before. While hardwoods and ceramic tiles remain the most popular, there are lots of other options that add to the beauty of the room. Glass or metal tiles lend a very contemporary look, while cork and leather flooring offer a relaxing texture ideal for living rooms and bedrooms.

If you\'re still following design rules from ten years ago, it\'s high time for an update. Here are some of the most common myths in home design and what you can do to avoid them. Find more information about modern home design.
